Key Far North District District Council civil defence personnel and contractors are working with emergency services to monitor and deal with the effects of today’s storm. Forecast strong winds and heavy rain is lashing the district, especially in the very Far North and Bay of Islands where storm damage including flooding, power cuts and house damage is being reported. Search and rescue personnel are looking for an overdue pig hunter reported missing at Karetu on the back road to Russell and are checking a reported sighting of a flare off Coopers Beach. Emergency services are currently managing the Far North situation without the need for the council to set up its emergency operations centre although civil defence staff are now working from the council’s Kaikohe office. Power outages have been reported at Russell through to Karetu, Waiomio through to Motutau, Kawakawa including the Bay of Islands hospital which is operating satisfactorily on generator, Ohaeawai through to Ngawha/Waimate North, Mangonui, Hihi and Karikari peninsula. Top Energy staff are working in these areas to restore power where possible. Roads are closed at Pokupu (Otiria), Matawaia, Ngataki, Ngatipito, SH10 is closed at Kaeo (with high tide around 1.15pm), and only just passable at Puketona, SH 12 is closed at Taheke, Opononi and Oue, and only just passable at Ngawha. The Fire Service is assisting Police with fallen trees and roof problems at Takahue and Kawakawa. A large redwood tree has fallen near Kerikeri New World close to a house which may need to be evacuated. Staff are keeping a close eye on the situation. The council has staff on the road across the district in order to have comprehensive monitoring of the situation, which will be updated as further information comes to hand For further information please contact:-
