Kerikeri
Mainstreet Progress |
It looks like a construction
zone now but the outcome is expected to give a whole new look to the
central business district when the current Kerikeri Mainstreet project
is completed in about five weeks time.
District Facilities General Manager Alastair Wells said today the project
was running to schedule and would make a significant difference to the
southern entrance to Kerikeri when completed.
Construction work in this stage of the Mainstreet programme has been
concentrated in the Homestead Road to Cobham Road area of the main street.
It is planned to extend the area when further funding becomes available.
"If further funding is available for 2008-09 through the Annual
Plan process, a decision will be made on which area to target next.
This will be done in consultation with the local business association
and the Eastern Community Board," he said.
A major part of the beautification plan involved under-grounding services
such as power and telecommunications and "future-proofing"
these services to provide capacity for expansion.
"The majority of the reinstatement work including sealing and acid-washing
the concrete surfaces will be completed within the next two to three
weeks. The final stages will involve planting out the area with a variety
of trees and palms, in keeping with the Mainstreet work carried out
in previous years on the Cobham Road junction and further north on Kerikeri
Road," Alastair Wells said.
"The contractors are attempting to minimize disruption to the commercial
area by doing as much work as possible at weekends and even in the early
hours of the morning. However it is inevitable there will be some inconvenience
to the public at critical times.
"The council would like to express its appreciation to the retailers
most directly affected and the Kerikeri community generally for its
cooperation and understanding while this work is being carried out,"
he said
