Arts/Cultural Funding

What is Arts/Cultural Funding?

Annually, Council may set aside as part of its budgeting process, funds to support arts and cultural events and/or projects in the Far North District.

Council's goals in allocating funds from the arts/grants donations budget are to:

  • Encourage participation in and access to the arts and cultural events
  • Encourage the range and diversity of arts and cultural events.
  • Enhance and strengthen the arts and cultural sector.
  • Encourage open air cultural/arts events by welcoming applications for Council's indirect support of such events, through road closures, litter control, subsidised venue hire, etc.

How much is set aside?

Council allocates the Council Arts/Grants Donations Budget as part of its annual budgeting process, by seeking and assessing applications according to set criteria. Refer to Who is eligible apply?

The amount allocated for a particular year will be stated in the Annual Plan or Long Term Council Community Pan (LTCCP), as appropriate. Councils are required to prepare a LTCCP every three years, with Annual Plans produced in the intervening years. This year, Council has prepared a LTCCP.

For the 2007/08 year the amount allocated is $35,000. This will be allocated at two separate funding meetings. 4 December 2007 and May 2008 (Date yet to be set).

Who is eligible apply?

Activities that may be funded include:

  • Events, festivals, and artworks
  • Personnel costs for one-off, short-term projects
  • Cultural or arts-related promotional activities
  • Materials for an arts event or activity
  • Seminars, workshops for local artists and art groups
  • Dance that has an arts and/or cultural focus (e.g. ballet, tap, jazz, etc).
  • School based projects that are outside the school's normal activities, provide for community participation or benefits the wider community.

Activities that are not eligible for funding include:

  • Facility development (e.g. the cost of buildings, refurbishment, etc)
  • Purchase of artworks for galleries
  • Arts activities in educational institutions normally funded through their curriculum and operating budgets.
  • Ongoing administration costs that are not related to a spec if project.
  • Retrospective project costs
  • Elimination of accumulated debt or debt servicing
  • Catering cots
  • Fundraising costs
  • Salaries
  • Prize monies
  • Travel outside of the area

How do I go about applying?

You will need to make an application before one of the two funding rounds yearly. On the form Arts/Cultural Funding Application Form. The next funding meeting is on 20 May 2008. Applications will close at 4.00pm on 26 April 2008.

In order to be considered by Council, the following application criteria must be met:

  • The submission must be legible and provide full details of the proposed project, including a declaration of funding applications made to or received from other organisations for the same project;
  • In the case of applications not made by individuals (e.g. those made on behalf of art groups, organisations, incorporated societies, etc.) the submission must include a statement of financial position or recent monthly/quarterly accounts.
  • The project will take place within the Far North District and/or will produce benefits primarily for the District
  • The submission must not seek retrospective funding or reimbursement of funds already expended on the project.

Other Criteria

To determine appropriate allocation of funding, Council assesses each eligible application to evaluate whether the funding proposal meets at least one of the following criteria:

  • The project will increase participation in the arts or cultural activity.
  • The project will increase the range or diversity of the arts or cultural activity available in the community.
  • The project will enhance and strengthen the arts and cultural sector.
  • The project will promote the Far North's arts and diverse cultures nationally and/or internationally.
