Kohu Ra Tuarua Ferry Slipping

Back in action, the recently maintained Hokianga Ferry has now returned to service as usual after its successful slipping.

This was the vessel’s first full “out of water” hull survey and maintenance since launching. Hull survey is a standard requirement of Maritime NZ (previously Maritime Safety Authority). The ferry was taken out of service on 5 October 2005, slipped on 6 October 2005, relaunched and put into service at mid-day Friday 14 October 2005, one and a half days ahead of schedule.

The Kohu Ra Tuarua is a double-ended monohull vehicle ferry designed and built for the Hokianga Harbour. The ship was built by Ship Constructors Ltd at Whangarei in April 1998 and after delivery and crew training entered service on 20 June 1998. The vessel is constructed of welded steel (hull) and aluminium (superstructure). It is owned by the Far North District Council and operated under contract by Transfield Services Ltd.

Because of the cost and difficulty of getting the vessel out of the water, we took the opportunity to carry out normal hull maintenance work (hull repaint) at the same time. A concrete hard-stand at The Narrows and a trolley to carry the vessel were constructed to enable this work to be carried out.

The civil engineering works consisted of the construction of a slipway which included the widening and extension of the concrete landing ramp, the installation of two sets of rails, and the construction of a winching deadman. Part of the works were carried out under water and the ferry was operating all the time this work was continuing.
