Overview

This study was a joint initiative between the Far North District Council and Kaipara District Council. It draws together existing data and information not readily available to the community, and assesses the suitability of land for identified selected crops. The Ministry of Economic Development provided the funding to undertake this study.

The aim of the study was to:

  • Provide an inventory of climate and soil information based on existing data.
  • Identify areas that show significant potential for the development of 10 selected crops, chosen as sustainable for the soils and climate of the study area.
  • Ensure the information is accessible and understandable to the community.

The Study results are presented in a booklet that provides maps, tables and explanatory text on climate, soils and identified selected crop alternatives.

This project is a Central Government-Local Government-Community partnership to realise the untapped potential of land use throughout the study area.

It is a first step in providing a comprehensive database on soil and climate suitability on which initiatives can be explored
