Broadband

Broadband provides high speed internet access.  Broadband is defined of speeds in excess of 512kbps (your normal dial up modem operates at speeds of approximately 24kbps-56kbps, depending on the quality of your phone line).

The Far North Development Trust has a number of initiatives underway.

Its main initiative at the time of writing is the "Whole of Community Broadband Telecommunications Service for Northland".

This initiative will deliver the Governments PROBE project (PROvincial Broadband Extension) to all schools in Northland by the end of 2004.  The whole of this Community initiative will mean that increasingly larger portions of the community will have access to Broadband services.

The system selected for Northland will allow simultaneous internet and voice traffic and voice communications will be toll free within the region.

The benefits for Economic Development to springboard off this new platform is substantial and will allow for remote video conferencing, plus other 'bandwidth' related technologies to be operated from Northland.
It is expected that this will encourage many people to move, work and live in Northland, rather than opting to live in large cities.
