Wood Processing
The Far North District has one of the largest areas of plantation
wood forests in New Zealand. From 2005 on, it is expected that
nearly two million tons of wood per annum will be harvested in the
Far North District, with expected ongoing yields at this level for
decades to come.
The Far North District Council is wishing to promote wood
processing in the Far North District.
The reasons for this are:
- To add more value to commodities locally to help to grow the
local economy, so as to stimulate increased investment and
employment opportunities.
- To reduce the weight of wood transported on the Far North
Districts roads network, so as to reduce the local cost of roads
maintenance.
- To reduce the number of heavy logging truck journeys that
conflict with road borne tourists and local users so as to
provide a more enjoyable and safer, driving experience for
motorists.
The Council is promoting wood processing in three ways, by;
- Providing information and data to help potential wood
processing investors.
- Meeting with and assisting potential wood processing investors
who may have an interest in the Far North District.
- Investigating suitable sites for potential wood processing
development.

spreadsheets, graphs, documents etc that will help potential
investors with their decision making.
