General Background InformationFar North District Council, together with the Northland Regional Council have entered in to a contract to have the whole of the Far North flown to produce aerial photographs. The project is 2/3rds complete. Council has received numerous requests from landowners, surveyors and other interested parties for copies of aerial photographs of certain areas of the district. Revenue collected from the sale of this information will be used to recover some of the implementation costs and will be progressively used to carry out further aerial photographic projects flying the urban areas at a higher resolution than was used for the initial project. Go to topScale and Quality of Images - Urban AreasThe aerial photographic project was established to meet the needs of both the Far North and the NRC largely for resource management and land use information. However it is recognised that the scale that was used for this better suited the larger rural areas rather than a higher definition scale that would be useful for the urban areas. The scale that was used was 5,000 to 1. this means that the smallest pixel or definable point is 1.25 metres. This is a useful scale for resource management however does not produce an adequate print for urban planning or asset management. This would require a scale of between 500 and 1000 to 1. Obviously having just invested in the larger scale project, Council would not necessarily wish to expend significant further sums in carrying out a high resolution urban programme. However it is suggested that such a programme may be possible if the proceeds from the sale of the current data could be targeted towards that aim. In the meantime, Council has adopted the abovementioned fees and charges and will retain the revenue with the aim of funding an urban aerial photographic program.
