Rating Information Database

Click here to search the Rating Information Database or read on for more information.

The Rating Information Database has been provided to meet the requirements of public access to rating information as provided for in the "Local Government (Rating) Act 2002.

Inspection of Rating Information Database

The Rating Information Database is available for inspection using our online Rating Information Database on this website or at all Far North District Council Service Centres during ordinary office hours.

Please Note: Name and address information is not available to the public through the online Rating Information Database on this website. Under the Local Government (Rating) Act, you must request name and address information by going to a Council office or can request an officer of the council to provide the information. (e.g. over the phone).

This is because electronic enquiries cannot be screened to distinguish between bulk enquiries for name and postal address information, and specific enquiries for specified rating units. The version of the RID available on this website is the abridged version (not the complete version) and does not display owners/ratepayers’ names and postal addresses.

Suppression of Property Owner Names and Addresses from the Rating Information Database

Changes to rating legislation mean that the names and addresses of property owners are publicly-available on the rating information database unless they are withheld at the request of the property owner.

If you wish to have your own name and address details withheld you must put your request in writing to the Rates Department.

Inspection of Rates Records

Under Section 38 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, there are restrictions on who can view all the details contained in the Council's rate records. This prevents unauthorised persons from viewing or receiving information about the state of the rate account.

Only the following persons may inspect the rates record for a rating unit

  • The ratepayer
(note: if there is doubt concerning the identity of the ratepayer for Maori freehold land – which may be the owner(s) or a lessee or trustees or other appointed person – Council's Iwi Services Department can be contacted)
  • A person who is authorised by the ratepayer to do so - this request should be in writing.
  • A person who has become liable to pay the rates in respect of the unit under section 61 or section 62 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002.
  • A solicitor, land broker, real estate agent, or any other person, who –
    (i) is a party to (or acting as an agent for a party to) a transaction relating to the rating unit; and
(ii) reasonably requires the information in the rates record for the purposes of the transaction
  • Any member of the public with respect to rates assessed, but not including arrears, remissions or postponed rates.
