Risks and Hazards

The Far North District is exposed to a range of hazards and threats that may require a civil defence response.  Hazards that have the potential to affect our communities include localised heavy rain/flooding, severe widespread storms, local volcanic activity, tsunami, fire, land instability, influenza pandemics and long term disruption to essential services such as electricity and fuel supplies.

Because of the Geographical spread of the Far North District, communities will become isolated as a result of some of these threats. Communities, businesses and households need to have a plan to assist them to respond and remain self reliant for least 72 hours without any outside assistance.

Civil Defence General Information

Many organisations work together during a Civil Defence Emergency. These include Central Government, Regional and District Council’s Emergency Services, Lifeline Utility Groups, other volunteer agencies and the community.

When a Civil Defence Emergency occurs you should plan to look after yourselves for at least three days. It could take days before essential services are restored and help is available. You can take some simple steps to be better prepared to reduce the impact of disasters when they happen, including developing a household emergency plan. Disasters can strike at any time and often without warning – you should know what to do before you have to do it.

For information on road closures during a storm event, log onto the Northland Regional Council website.  (link below).
