Creative Communities Scheme

What is it?

The Far North District Council administers the Creative Communities Scheme which is funded by Creative New Zealand.

Creative New Zealand is a central government organisation responsible for developing the arts in New Zealand.

Established as a crown entity under the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa Act 1994, Creative New Zealand's funding comes from Government through Vote Arts, Culture and Heritage and the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board.

Their governing body is the Arts Council and their funding decision-making bodies are the Arts Board, Te Waka Toi (our Maori arts board) and the Pacific Arts Committee.

Who should apply?

Groups and individuals seeking funding for local arts and cultural activities may receive financial assistance under the Creative Communities Scheme.

'Arts' is broadly defined to mean any 'Creative Practice' including those relating to language, literature, performing arts and visual arts.

How much money is available?

The Far North District Council receives funding annually from Creative NZ. The amount is proportionate to the population in the District.

For the 2009 - 2010 year $38,507 will be allocated from Creative NZ.

Out of the total amount the Council distributes funding totalling $24,500.00 to seven Community Arts Council's. Refer below for funding criteria.

This money is distributed by way of a grant or a guarantee against loss (GAL) for events where the group needs to ensure that they cover their costs. If the GAL is not needed, then the group returns the excess funding to the Creative Communities Scheme within the Far North District Council.

Making an application

Applicants should apply for a grant from their Community Arts Council for funding at any time during the year, for amounts up to $500.00. They should contact their Community Arts Council direct. See below for contacts in your area.

If the applicant wishes to apply for an amount in excess of $500.00 (but not more than $2500.00) they can apply to Council using the Creative Communities application form. All application forms and guidelines are available at each Far North District Council Service Centre.

The Council holds 6 monthly funding rounds - in 2010 these will be 2 March and 14 September. Dates are advertised in local newspapers two months prior to the meetings. Although an application can be made at any time the assessment committee who allocate the funds only meet twice per year.

If the customer wishes to apply for an amount over $2500.00, they should contact Creative New Zealand direct on (03) 366 2072 or www.creativenz.govt.nz.

Funding can be distributed by way of a grant or a guarantee against loss (GAL) for events where the group needs to ensure that they cover their costs. If the GAL is not needed, then the group returns the excess funding to the Creative Communities Scheme within the Far North District Council.
