Hundertwasser Fund
Friedensreich Hundertwasser had a special love for New Zealand and adopted Kawakawa as his second home. As a way of returning something to his adopted town he offered to re-design, using an original design, the public toilets in Gillies Street, Kawakawa. Council accepted the offer and Friedensreich himself worked on the site, hand selecting the bottles, tiles, stones, mosaics and plants/trees used in and around the building (donating many of the materials). His work contributed to a piece of art that has brought considerable interest and attention to Kawakawa.
A donation box was installed at the Hundertwasser building, and at the time the Kawakawa Community Board resolved to use the donations for the future enhancement of the Hundertwasser project. Donations received from the general public are collected by Kawakawa Service Centre staff and are separately identified in the Community Board financial reports.
In recognition of Hundertwasser’s input into the project and his love of the area, Council has determined that these donations are to be specifically used to benefit the Kawakawa Community and encourage the artistic endeavours of, in particular, students from the area. However, Council also determined that consideration might be given to allocating funds towards Hundertwasser Week activities and the acquisition of relevant memorabilia.
An example of the latter would be the purchase of a Hundertwasser Catalogue Raissone and an appropriate case to accommodate it. These uses are considered to be in accord with the Community Board’s resolution.
The funding is administered by the Eastern (Whangaroa/Bay of Islands) Community Board.
