Liquor Licensing
The Far North District Council oversees the administration of the Sale of Liquor Act.
This is carried out by the District Licensing Agency, the Liquor Licensing Secretary and Inspector who encourage the responsible sale and use of alcohol through licensing, monitoring of premises and enforcement of the requirements of the Sale of Liquor Act

What type of liquor license do I need?
There are various different liquor licenses required according to the kind of activity involved.
NB. A Certificate of Compliance (Liquor) is required for any new licenses including changes in ownership, alterations, redefinitions and variations to existing licences.
The Certificate of Compliance (Liquor) pamphlet explains how to apply for a Certificate of Compliance (Liquor) and includes a checklist you may use to ensure that you have included all the necessary information in your application. If applicable, please ensure that you have a current Building Warrant of Fitness when you apply for a Certificate of Compliance (Liquor).

Special license:
required for any of the following activities: One-off event or series of events in either a licensed or un-licensed premises.
On-license:
required for any of the following activities: Bar
Bar & café, Restaurant, Café, BYO restaurant, Tourist hotel, Night club, Hotel
Tavern, Winebar Entertainment Ctr, Vessels
Off-license:
required for any of the following activities: Brewery, Gift baskets, Clubs, Hotels, Wholesalers, Taverns, Supermarkets, Wineries
Club license:
is required for any of the following activities: Sports club, Social clubs, Also refer Sports Clubs Association NZ information
Mobile shop or van
This type of license is not allowed under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989
Bar Manager
Under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 there must be a manager on duty at all times when liquor is being sold to the public.
A manager must hold a current manager's certificate. More information on Manager's Certificates.
Temporary Authority
Between an old and new owner.
A bridging license is known as a temporary authority, and it allows a new owner or the business which has an existing liquor license to continue the sale and supply of liquor with the same hours and conditions, for a 3 month period while applying for their own License. A temporary authority must be applied for before taking over the business.

The Fees for licence applications, are for licence applications only. Additional fees may be payble for a Certificate of Compliance for, On, Off or Club Licenses etc.
