Council's pound details

There are Animal Control Offices in Kaikohe and Kaitaia.

Dogs will only be released from the pound upon arrangement with an Animal Control Officer and upon full payment of fees owing, or to check if a dog is in the pound.

Impounding fees will vary - and will depend on the number of times a dog has been impounded and how many days the dog has been held. Dog owners must contact us to verify the amount payable to release their dog.

Number of dogs allowed

There are no legal restrictions as to the number of dogs allowed on a property other than those areas stated in the Fifth Schedule of the Dog Control Bylaw 2006 where the keeping of more than two dogs requires a permit from the Far North District Council. If this applies to you, please complete and return to us the Application for Keeping of More than 2 Dogs on Property form

Dogs on beaches and in public areas

Rules concerning dogs on specific beaches and in public areas are set out in the Dog Control Bylaw 2006

Outside these areas, dogs must be under control but not necessarily on a lead - that is, the owner is present and using a lead, voice or body language, or any other method of control. The dog should be no further than 5 metres away from the owner for the dog to be classed as "under control" by FNDC Animal Control.  Please note some parks may have stricter rules; these are listed in the Dog Control Bylaw 2006

Who owns that dog?

Sometimes you need to find out the owner of a registered dog (e.g. because it has damaged your property and you want to make an insurance claim).  To get this information we need you to complete and submit the form,  Application for Name and Address of Registered Owner of a Dog.
