Managing an existing dog registration

I haven't received, or need a replacement, a dog registration notice

Please contact us.  You will need to let us know whether you have recently changed address, and the most recent registration details, including your dog's ID number.

I have been charged the wrong fee

Please send us the invoice, along with proof of your entitlement to an alternate fee.

I've sold my registered dog

Under the Dog Control Act 1996, you are required to notify the Council within 14 days of a change of ownership of your dog.  If you have acquired or sold a dog that is already registered, both owners must also complete and provide a single Change of Ownership form.

Death, Theft or Loss of Dog

Under the Dog Control Act 1996, you are required to notify the Council within 14 days of the death, theft or loss of your dog.  We will need you to complete the Declaration of Death, Theft or Loss of Dog form.

Please retain your dog's registration tag as you will need to return this, along with the Refund Application form to Council or supply a registered veterinarian's death certificate if you wish to apply for a refund of Dog Registration Fees.  The refund is based on the date the notification is received, i.e., if you apply for a refund in December, the registration fee from January onwards will be refunded. If you do not tell us until you receive the next registration notice, you will not be entitled to a refund.

My dog is de-sexed - do I qualify for exemption of fees?

A registration fee for this current registration period is not payable in respect of dogs that have been spayed or neutered for which a veterinarian’s certificate is supplied.

How do I get a new or replacement dog tag?

Tags for the current year are handed or posted out once payment is received.  If your dog has lost its tag, please complete and return the Replacement Tag Request form and appropriate fee, and we will issue a new one.

I have received a notice for the previous occupants of my property

Please return the notice to Council, marked "No longer at this address".

There are errors on the registration notice

If any of the details on the registration notice are wrong, please amend it and return it with your payment, and we will update our records.

What if I don't pay my account?

If your dog registration is not paid an infringement notice will be served. If this is not paid, a notice will be lodged with the Court for enforcement of the Infringement Notice issued.  The registration fee remains payable.

How can I pay?

Payments must be made in full and can be posted to Council in the pre paid envelope or can be made in person at Service CentresPayment cannot be made to the Animal Control Officers as, for security reasons, they are unable to hold cash. Part payments are not accepted.

New dog not included on my account

Payment on the additional dog(s) can be made by adding the new dog (and the appropriate fees) to the invoice. (Remember, include a copy of the desexing certificate for the dog to be eligible for the discount.) Please also complete and return an Application for Dog Registration form.

I've moved within the District

Please complete and return the Change of Address form.

I've moved in/out of the District. Can I transfer my dog registration?

Yes.  If you've just moved to the Far North, please complete and return the Transfer into District Form and take the existing dog tags into any Council office to swap it (free of charge) for an FNDC tag.  If the dog's tag has been lost, you must produce proof of registration (a receipt of purchase), and you will be given a FNDC tag for a minimal fee.  You will also need to inform the local authority in the area you have moved from that you are no longer residing in that area.

If you are moving your registered dog away the Far North into another area you should take the FNDC tag to a Council office in the area you are transferring to and swap it for a tag for the new area.  If you have lost the dog's tag you must produce proof of FNDC registration (a receipt of purchase) to be given a new tag.

You will also need to inform the Far North District Council in writing that you are no longer residing in the area and that you have transferred your dog's registration.
