Pound Pooches
Process for re-homing a dog from the pound
- Note the 'Animal ID' number of the dog you would like to re-home
- Complete the Pound Pooches form
- An Animal Control Officer will contact you as soon as possible regarding your query
- Animal Control will check the circumstances of the possible re-homing (e.g. ownership history, property suitability etc)
- You will need to complete the dog registration form and pay the registration and micro-chipping fees. For further information see Dog Registration or Microchipping Information.

a) Please note that the dog(s) you have enquired about may no longer be in the Pound at the time of your enquiry. The Pound Pooch site is updated as soon as is practicable following any dog depicted on the site no longer being held at the Pound. You will be contacted as soon as possible with regard to whether a dog is still available for re-homing.
b) Council reserve the right to decline a re-homing request
c) Breeds or types of dogs listed in Schedule 4 of the Dog Control Act 1996 will not be available for re-homing
d) A re-homed dog may be subject to being returned to its original owner.
Adoption Criteria
Some persons may not ‘qualify’ for being able to adopt a dog. The criteria that would possibly prevent a person from being able to adopt a dog from the Council are :
- Previous non registration history
- Numbers of existing dogs on the property e.g. in a permit controlled zone
- Property suitability for the dog
- Previous history with regard to proven offences of such things as straying, nuisance, barking etc.
Some persons will not ‘qualify’ for being able to adopt a dog. The criteria that would prevent a person from being able to adopt a dog from the Council are :
- Previous convictions under the Dog Control Act 1996 or the Animal Welfare Act 1999
- Previous Infringement Notice issued for offences in relation to Section 57; 57A of the Dog Control Act 1996.
- Existing dogs on the property that are not currently registered.
