Copyright

The Aerial Photography is owned jointly between Far North District Council and Northland Regional Council and is subject to copyright.

The photography may not be copied or reproduced without the expressed permission of the Far North District Council or Northland Regional Council.

General Background Information

Far North District Council, together with the Northland Regional Council entered into a contract in 2000 to have the whole of the Far North flown to produce Aerial Photographs. The project is now complete and Council has been receiving requests from landowners, surveyors and other interested parties for copies of Aerial Photographs of certain areas of the district.

Council has made a significant investment in this project, and it is appropriate that it be able to recover some of this through the sale of the information. It is suggested that this revenue will be progressively used to carry out further aerial photographic projects flying the urban areas at a higher resolution than was used for the initial project.

Aerial photography area of coverage

The contract was to have the whole of the Far North flown to produce Aerial Photographs.
The contract has now been completed and on request a map can be supplied.

High Level Photography
All of the District has now been completed. However the time frame of the flying dates covered 6 years.

The Central portion of the District was flown in March 2000 (Lake Omapere to Kaimaumau)

The Northern portion of the District was flown in April 2003 (Kaimaumau to The Cape)

The Southern portion of the District was flown in January 2006 (Lake Omapere to the Southern boundary)

FNDC is currently in the process of acquiring Satellite Imagery which will cover the whole of the District from the KiwiImage Project and this will be available as it is delivered.

Low Level Photography
Is available in the townships of Eastcoast, Houhora, Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Ngawha, Okiato, Paihia, Pukenui, Russell, Totara North, Whangaroa. This was flown at various times in 2002.

Scale and Quality of Images

The aerial photographic project was established to meet the needs of both the Far North and the NRC largely for resource management and land use information. However it is recognised that the scale that was used for this better suited the larger rural areas rather than a higher definition scale that would be useful for the urban areas.

Obviously having just invested in the larger scale project, Council would not necessarily wish to expend significant further sums in carrying out a high resolution urban programme. However it is suggested that such a programme may be possible if the proceeds from the sale of the current data could be targeted towards that aim.

In the meantime, Council has adopted the above mentioned fees and charges and will retain the revenue with the aim of funding an urban aerial photographic program.

High Level Photography

The scale that was used was 1:5,000. This means that the smallest pixel or definable point is 1.25 metres. This is a useful scale for resource management however does not produce an adequate print for urban planning or asset management. This would require a scale of between 1:500 and 1:1000.

Low Level Photography

The scale that was used was 1:500. This means that the smallest pixel or definable point is 0.12 metres.

Satellite Photography

The scale that was used was 1:2,500. This means that the smallest pixel or definable point is 0.6 metres. When all the imagery has been delivered, for FNDC this is a means of providing relatively cheap photography updated on a regular basis.
