Water, Wastewater and Refuse
Sewerage Information
Council provides a series of sewage treatment facilities across the district. These are used to treat the effluent from both reticulated sewerage schemes and in some cases from septic tanks.
More stringent cultural and environmental standards are increasing the operating and upgrading requirements of the sewerage schemes and council is always striving to improve their effectiveness and efficiency and to reduce costs to ratepayers, especially in the long term.
Meanwhile many Far North communities do not have reticulated sewerage schemes and these properties have On-Site Wastewater Disposal Systems such as Septic Tanks and Aerated systems. These systems are installed and maintained by the homeowner.
Far North District Council does not provide a council operated Trade Waste Service. However Commercial Operators who provide this service can found in the local phone book.
Water Information
There are 8 Council water supply systems delivering drinking water to communities in the Far North as well as a number of other areas with privately owned water supplies such as Kaeo, Doubtless Bay and Te Kao.
Council schemes serve resident populations ranging from 120 to 5,400 and a total resident population of about 22,000. A programme of works has been underway since 2005 to improve both quality and quantity of water produced at the treatment plants. This is an ongoing process and is expected to be complete in 2012.
Refuse Information
The Far North District Council is committed to reducing the amount of refuse sent to Landfills and providing ongoing education regarding recycling. This will lead to greater sustainability and a much better environment in which to live.
Commercial Operators provide both kerbside refuse and recycling collections in specific areas and Council provides Transfer Stations and landfills in other areas to cater for the people who currently do not have access to kerbside services.
