General Information

This page contains some general information about water and some frequently asked questions.

Water Shutdowns

In some instances Council needs to shutdown the water supply to do work on the water supply system. Whilst we are able to notify you of the expected timeframe the water will be unavailable for planned works, there are also some instances where we will need to turn the water off unexpectedly. The required works will then be fixed as soon as possible. Please (contact us) for restoration times if your water supply is unexpectedly turned off.

Important Note: We have a registered supplied to us by Northland District Health Board of those people in the district who are receiving dialysis at home and therefore required a continuous supply of water. If you would like to check that our records are up to date and your name is on there, please feel free to (contact us).

Service Locations

If you require an approximate location of where a Council water line is you can (contact us) and we can send, email or fax you a plan if we have one available. If you require the service to be exposed, we can organise this for you through our contractors, but there will be a charge for this.

If you need to find the location of the water line within your property you will need to engage a plumber or drain layer at your cost. In some instances there may be a plan on your property file showing the route of the pipe, sometimes known as an as-built or as-laid. There may be a minimal photocopying charge for any copies requested.

Services should be clearly identified on each site prior to the commencement of any works to avoid any damage to service pipes.

Please note: Only Council Contractors can work on any Council owned water line.

Water from Fire Hydrants Information

No water can be taken from a hydrant without a permit. If you are requiring water from a hydrant, you will need to apply for permission to draw water and obtain a Council issued standpipe.  These should only be operated by an experienced person.

Please either (contact us) or our contractors Transfield Services Ltd on (09) 4052602 to discuss requesting a standpipe. Such permits can be issued immediately.

Water Quality

If you have any queries or concerns regarding the quality of your water and are connected to a Council water supply, please (contact us). These may be where your water tastes funny, is discoloured, smells, or is dirty or cloudy. If you are concerned about your water quality and have a water tank, Transfield Services have a service available. You can contact Transfield on (09) 4052602.

Building over Service Lines

Council has a number of lines within private property. No structure will be permitted to be built over either water supply lines or water easements.

Illegal Water Use

It is illegal to remove your water meter or bypass a meter to avoid paying for any usage. If you would like to discuss or report any such property or person that you believe is using water illegally or is in some other way in breach of Councils Water Bylaw, please (contact us).
