Ordinary People Who Do Extraordinary Things

Nominations for the Far North District Council’s 2009 Citizens Awards open 7 September 2009.

These awards are an opportunity to celebrate the work that goes on behind the scenes, work that keeps our communities healthy and contributes to the well being of our citizens.

Volunteers make a vital contribution to the social and environmental well being of our district. They enhance Council services and provide additional service that otherwise might not be available in our smaller communities.

Up to ten outstanding Far North citizens are formally recognized for voluntary contributions they have made to their communities and their names are recorded on an honours board in the Council reception area at Kaikohe each year.

The annual awards were launched in 2001 to commemorate the International Year of the Volunteer. The awards are made to individual citizens who:

  • have made a considerable contribution to the well-being of the Far North District and its citizens over a significant period of time; and
  • have not received payment or other remuneration for their services; and
  • are residents in the district at the time of the nomination

If you know someone who has demonstrated outstanding courage or bravery, who has shown exceptional kindness toward others, or someone who has selflessly given their time to making a difference in the community, please let the council know.
