Citizenship Ceremonies
Successful applicants for New Zealand citizenship are required to attend a public citizenship ceremony where they swear allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of New Zealand, and are presented with their citizenship certificates. These ceremonies are held at the Far North District Council.
At the ceremony, applicants take the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance, declaring that they will honour Queen Elizabeth the Second, obey the laws of New Zealand and be a good citizen. It is only after swearing allegiance that a person actually becomes a New Zealand citizen.
The Council arranges for a photographer to be at the ceremony and new citizens and their guests are then invited for light refreshments. New citizens are provided with a photograph of the ceremony and a folder with a New Zealand passport application form.
When are Citizenship Ceremonies held?
Citizenship ceremonies are generally held 4 to 5 times per year. To find out when a ceremony will be held, please contact the Department of Internal Affairs.
How many guests may attend?
Normally three additional guests are entitled to accompany each individual being granted citizenship at the ceremony. However, additional guests may be permitted depending on individual circumstances. This will be arranged directly with the individual concerned.
