Illegal Dumping of Rubbish
What is illegal dumping?
The dumping of rubbish is considered to be illegal when people discard their rubbish down a bank or stream, at laybys, or in town litterbins.
It is unfair and detracts from the beauty of our District. It costs the ratepayer, because the Council must meet the expense of rubbish removal, follow up complaints, and prosecute people for illegal dumping. Please contact us to report illegal dumping of rubbish.
Council staff will want to know:
- Where the rubbish has been dumped?
- Whether it is dangerous and presents a potential health hazard, e.g. chemicals or broken glass?
- Who do you suspect may have dumped the rubbish?
A reward of $500 may be offered for information leading to the successful prosecution of any person caught dumping illegally.
Illegal dumping is an offence under the Litter Act 1979, with offenders liable for fines of up to $400 for each offence.
