Sister Cities

Sister Cities is a programme of pairing cities around the world to promote co-operation, cultural understanding and economic development.

History and Benefits

When Dwight D Eisenhower launched the concept of sister cities in 1956 he said:

The purpose of the sister cities programme is to increase international understanding and foster world peace by furthering international communication and exchange at the person-to-person level through city-to-city affiliations”.

The pairing of two cities in different countries aims to increase global co-operation at a local level to promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development.  It also fosters a network of individuals devoted to creating and strengthening partnerships between New Zealand and international communities.  Other economic benefits arising from sister city relationships include establishing business contacts, providing a gateway into new markets and product lines, enhancing the overseas reputation of both individual firms and New Zealand and increasing tourism.  Throughout New Zealand there are Sister City Relationships with 17 different countries with an estimated boost to the NZ economy of around $55m per annum.
