Kohukohu is an unaltered and compact example of a nineteenth century European coastal township at the heart of the New Zealand timber trade. It has local and regional significance because of architectural and technical qualities that are still intact. There are no significant changes to the precinct location (other than refining the area) because it already covers the historical extent of the township.
