Applications invited for events funding

Funding is now available to support events that will boost visitor numbers and benefit the Far North.

The Council’s Events Investment Fund is open to any type of event or festival, but should promote cultural, economic and social benefits, as well as environmental sustainability.

Mayor John Carter says that with opportunities for international travel still limited, New Zealanders are looking for new experiences closer to home.

“There is no better time for groups and individuals to develop events that will promote the Far North. Our natural environment and climate are great draw cards, but we also have a unique history and culture to promote and share with others.”

He says the fund has previously assisted with events both large and small, including the Bay of Islands Waka Ama Festival at Waitangi, the recent Great NZ Walk series, Ngapae Far North Torpedo Fishing Competition, Kerikeri Half Marathon, the Wander Women Adventure Race at Russell, and OI Creatives indigenous art and culture festival at Kaitaia.

There is a total of $80,000 available in the Events Investment Fund for 2021/21. There is no upper limit that groups can apply for but grants typically range between $5000 and $15,000. Funding will cover most costs associated with running an event, such as catering, venue or equipment hire.

To be considered applicants must outline the cultural, social and economic benefits of staging their event and provide a simple business plan.

They have until 24 June to complete applications.

Go to the FNDC website to learn more about funding criteria and to make an application.
