Community magic happening in Makerspace

Generous community members sharing their practical skills are creating magic at the Procter Library with activities from building bird feeders to gardening, recycling and repurposing textiles.

Community members who generously share their practical skills, donate materials and volunteer their time are creating magic in the Makerspace at the Procter Library, as was recently highlighted by the school holiday programmes on offer.

From building bird feeders, to learning about gardening, recycling and repurposing, a diverse range of activities was made possible due to residents ‘paying it forward’ to enhance the lives of our local tamariki and their whānau.

The bird feeder workshop run by Kevin from the Kerikeri Men’s Shed, drew a good crowd of enthusiastic ‘future builders’. Kevin and fellow men’s shedder Peter prepared, cut and drilled enough components for 60 bird feeders to come to life during the workshop. Under their direction tamariki, parents and library staff learnt how to use the tools and add their unique touch to the bird feeders they created.

Carol from hardware retailer, Bunnings, organised bird seed and wire for the bird feeder project and also donated supplies for future workshops including ear muffs, a heat gun, grass seed for garden crafts, and a dremel (a power tool used for cutting, grinding, sanding, carving, sharpening and polishing DIY projects).

‘Supercrafter’ Becs supplied linseed oil to protect and enhance wood creations, while gardening expert Sandy organised tubs of soil for garden activities. Local sustainability champion, Kate, also donated and arranged piles of recycled fabrics for textile projects.

Procter Library staff would like to thank all those in the community who generously donate their time, resources and skills to creating a range of practical activities in the Makerspace.

If you have specialist skills or knowledge to share with your community, please contact our friendly staff at any of our libraries.
