Final results confirm new Council line-up

Final election results released by Election Services have confirmed the new line-up of the Far North District Council.

Final election results released by Election Services have confirmed the new line-up of the Far North District Council.

The final results saw Mayor John Carter increase his total vote by 141, taking his final result to 5831 votes. This confirms his third term as Mayor. His nearest rival, Deputy Mayor Tania McInnes, received 3903.

Despite some candidates having slim majorities when the preliminary results were announced on Sunday 13 October, the final tally has not altered the line-up of elected members. By-election

Despite two candidates being elected to the Council as well as a Community Board position, only one by-election will be required.

Rachel Smith was re-elected unopposed to her role on the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board representing the Kerikeri Subdivision. She was also one of four candidates elected to the Council in the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Ward. Because no other candidate stood for her Community Board position, a by-election will be held. Official notice of the by-election will be published on 22 November 2019, and ballot papers will be posted to Kerikeri Subdivision electors ahead of the 18 February 2020 polling day.

Moko Tepania was also elected to both the Council in the Kaikohe-Hokianga Ward, and to the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board. His position on the Community Board will be taken by the candidate with the next highest number of votes in the Kaikohe Subdivision. That means Mike Edmonds, who won 642 votes, will serve another term as an elected member on the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board.
