Free bus travel is just the ticket

Bus passengers in Northland get a free ride on Friday (22 September) as part of Car Free Day.

Bus passengers in Northland get a free ride on Friday (22 September) as part of Car Free Day.

The global event encourages motorists to park their cars for the day and instead use public transport, walk or cycle to help protect the environment. It’s an easy way to take positive action on climate change – and there’s no stress about parking.

In the Far North, the Kaitāia to Mangōnui return service run by Far North Link will be free for all passengers all day on Friday to give locals the chance to support the cause.

Far North Link runs several other services, including Kaitāia to Ahipara and Pukenui, and the Kaitāia town circuit. However, these services don’t run on Fridays, so they are not included in Car Free Friday. Likewise, the Mid North Link that runs from Kaikohe to Kerikeri and Waipapa, and the Hokianga Link between Kaikohe, Ōpononi and Ōmāpere, do not operate on Fridays.

In Whangārei, all CityLink services will be free across the town, with further information on the CityLink website.

For further information about Far North Link and the timetable for Friday’s Kaitāia to Mangōnui service, head to their website. Far North Link is operated with support from Northland Regional Council, Waka Kotahi, and Community Business & Environment Kaitāia.
