Fun and games funding from community board

Fun and games came out tops at a recent meeting of the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board with funding awarded to a sports tournament and other upcoming events.

Fun and games came out tops at a recent meeting of the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board as applications for available funding were granted for upcoming events.

In the games category was Wainui Marae, which is hosting the Piri Wiremu Mokena Memorial Tournament for its 40th year. The rugby and netball tournament at the Kāeo Rugby Sports Club runs from Friday 20 October to Sunday 22 October. The marae was awarded $5530 to go towards the cost of hosting the event.

Other community events had a focus on fun further into the future. While October may seem to have come around quickly for some people, others are already planning ahead to Christmas. Business Paihia is the first this year to apply for Christmas parade funding and it received $5000 from the board. The parade in Paihia is due to be held on Friday 1 December at 5.30pm.

Also bringing the ‘heat’ to the board was an application to cover costs for the installation of two heat pumps at the Waipapa Community Hall. Use of the hall has been increasing recently and the heat pumps will ensure the hall is more appealing to those looking to hire it through the winter months. Applicants were awarded $4083.
