7 July 2022 6.00 AM UDPATE: The Level 4 water restriction has now been lifted as the water supply from the dam is now operational; we have sufficient supply now.

Level 4 water restrictions are being applied in Kaitāia from today, restricting water use to drinking, cooking and washing only. Heavy rain overnight has blocked the Awanui River intake and crews are needing to wait for flood waters to recede before attempting to unblock the intake.

General Manager – Infrastructure and Asset Management, Andy Finch, says imposing Level 4 restrictions will ensure residents have water supply for essential needs while the issue is further investigated and resolved.

“Recent heavy rain has caused a blockage at our Awanui River intake which has caused water flows in this waterway to fall rapidly. The restrictions we are placing today will help reduce demand on the limited supply and ensure water service continues for essential needs while we work to resolve the issue.”

Level 4 restrictions mean water is for essential use only and can only be used for drinking, cooking and washing.

Simple water conservation measures include:

  • Flushing toilets less often
  • Only washing clothes on a full load
  • Turning off the tap while brushing teeth or washing hands
  • Fixing leaking taps, toilets and other fittings.

Further notice will be given as work progresses to resolve blockage.
