New Kerikeri playground opens

A new playground that is part of the Kerikeri Domain Revitalisation Project is now open to the public, as of this morning (Friday 19 August 2022).

A small gathering to bless the completion of the new playground in the Kerikeri Domain was held this morning (Friday 19 August) and attended by the project working group, including representatives from Ngāti Rēhia, as well as council staff and contractors.

The newly designed and installed playground has been relocated to sit alongside the already completed skate park and basketball court. Improved sports field lighting, access and pathways are also part of the Kerikeri Domain Revitalisation Project which started in August 2021.

Centrally located in the Far North’s largest town, new facilities at the Kerikeri Domain have been popular with residents throughout the district, as revamped areas have opened to the public as soon as construction is completed. The new playground completes the current phase of the domain revitalisation.

The playground opens from today, Friday 19 August. However, some fencing will remain until new turf is established. The new flying fox will also open when turf can be established in drier weather. Finally, toddler fencing around the sandpit and rubber matting area will be installed once delayed products arrive.

A grand opening of the Kerikeri Domain, to mark the completion of the entire revitalisation project, is planned for later this year. The $3 million project is funded from the government’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund.
