New carpark improves Awanui road safety

A much-needed carpark is reducing congestion and improving road safety at a key intersection in Awanui.

A much-needed carpark is reducing congestion and improving road safety at a key intersection in Awanui.

The carpark, which is located just off the intersection of State Highway 10 and 11, was opened earlier this month and has space for over 20 vehicles.

Its location has provided a convenient and safe alternative for visitors to a busy café and other local businesses at the junction. It also caters for a nearby playground, which is likely to see a significant increase in visitors once a new pump track is completed at the site in coming weeks.

New kerbing, seal, and markings were completed on the carpark in November along with retractable bollards at the entrance that can be raised to prevent overnight parking.

The new carpark is part of Te Hiku o te Ika Revitalisation Project, which is funded by Kānoa – the government’s Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit. The community-led project has created 81 urban development, restoration, and revitalisation projects in Kaitāia, Awanui and Ahipara. The arts, beautification and infrastructure projects were identified through community consultation undertaken by Te Hiku o te Ika Open Spaces Masterplan Working Group and delivered in partnership with the council.
