Councillors have decided to make Far North District Libraries fine free from July 1, 2022. This means there will no longer be any fines for overdue books. However, there will still be charges for customers who lose or damage an item.

Council Libraries have not charged fines for children and teens for the past two years. Book borrowing grew by 74% for that age group within a year of the change.

Moving to fines free for all library members will remove a disincentive for some and it is anticipated this will encourage more users to borrow books. Going fines free is part of a nationwide public Libraries’ initiative.

Far North District Council operates six libraries and one mobile library van in the Far North. It is free to become a member for all Far North Council Libraries.
