Paihia waterfront project unaffordable

Far North District Council accepted advice today that plans to build breakwaters and other storm protection at Paihia was unaffordable due to rapidly escalating construction costs.

Far North District Council accepted advice today that plans to build breakwaters and other storm protection at Paihia was unaffordable due to rapidly escalating construction costs.

The $13.84 million Paihia Waterfront Development was to be jointly funded with an $8 million grant to Far North Holdings Ltd made through the government’s Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund and $5.84 million from the council.

The decision to end the project was taken during an Extraordinary Council Meeting held yesterday. As part of that decision, Mayor John Carter asked staff to report back on potential coastal projects across the district that the council’s share could be used for. The $8 million in government funding earmarked for the Paihia Waterfront Development will not now be available.

Mayor Carter also asked staff to arrange a public meeting in Paihia for the council to meet with residents, mana whenua, and businesses and community leaders to hear options on alternative projects.
