Tauranga Bay dotterels focus of new-look council signs

The need to protect nesting and endangered dotterels at Tauranga Bay will be a key focus of new-look, highly visible council signs due to be installed before May.

The need to protect nesting and endangered dotterels at Tauranga Bay will be a key focus of new-look, highly visible council signs due to be installed before May.

The distinctive blue signs will ensure that information on council bylaws and other rules are clearly displayed and easily understood. At the same time, location-specific conditions can be highlighted within the new layout.

The signs to be installed at Tauranga Bay are the first to use the new approach and will include messaging on the need to protect a significant population of nesting dotterels. The new signs will replace a number of older notices, some of which were washed away during recent storms. This will unclutter the beach community landscape and create more uniform and instantly recognisable messaging.

Large 1.2m by 0.6m signs will be installed at beach and reserve entrances and will include symbols detailing rules and bylaws, including for vehicle use on beaches, camping and dog control. These will be displayed on a smaller, secondary notice that can be easily removed and updated as required. This leaves the main sign intact, reducing replacement costs for ratepayers.

Smaller signs measuring 0.4m by 0.6m will display location-specific information at other key beach locations, such as to be aware of nearby dotterel nesting sites.

Similar new-look signs will be rolled out to other Far North locations as required.
