Last week (18 November) was the first official meeting for the Te Hiku Community Board, and they have distributed over $25,000 to three community groups.

The board distributed $20,000 to Houhora Big Game and Sports Fishing Club towards the purchase of a commercial oven. The fishing club provides meals to club members and the public regularly on Friday and Saturday evenings cooking up to 130 meals on club nights. The club also caters for weddings, funerals, meetings, and various events throughout the year.

In considering the application the Board understood that due to Covid, adverse weather conditions and a maritime tragedy, the club had been unable to fundraise by way of its usual fishing competitions.

Another $7,000 was distributed between the following:

  • $3,000 worth of funding to Paparore School for equipment hire for the school Whanau Open Day.
  • $4,000 to SMC Events Limited on behalf of Sanitarium for the Te Hiku Sanitarium WeetBix Kids TRYchallenge and specifically the event kit.

Northland will not have a Sanitarium TRYathlon this year, instead Northland will be having TRYchallenge which will be hosted by chosen schools in each of the community board areas. It is hoped that 1000 plus students take part in the TRYchallenge over the three schools across the district. The benefit of the TRYchallenge is that removes barriers to participation including travel and having borrow or purchase a bike for the previous TRYathlon event.
