Temporary move for Kerikeri bus stop

Kerikeri’s Cobham Road bus stop will be temporarily relocated across the road to outside Procter Library.

The decision follows a public meeting organised last week by the Kerikeri Ratepayers and Residents Association and attended by Mayor John Carter, councillors and community board members. 

During the Thursday meeting, elected members agreed to review a councillor proposal to move the bus stop to Bay of Islands Airport. 

A number of alternative options had been raised by the public during the Thursday evening meeting and during the previous week. Council staff will investigate these. 

In the meantime, and to address concerns about public safety, the intercity bus stop will be moved across Cobham Road to outside the library. 

This temporary measure will relieve pressure on some Cobham Road businesses and allow Council staff to fully investigate alternative bus stop locations. 

All viable alternatives, including the Bay of Islands Airport option, will be included in the district’s draft Integrated Transport Strategy to be released for public consultation in October.

A majority of those attending the meeting voted in support the temporary move, and St John and Fire and Emergency Northland also back the plan. The current bus stop is directly outside an opportunity shop operated by St John on Cobham Road, and is also within metres of the Kerikeri Fire Station entrance.  

Transport operators are being informed of the temporary move, which will be undertaken as soon as possible.
