Used tech helps needy communities

Far North District Council is protecting the environment and supporting under-privileged communities by donating its electronic waste to charity.

Far North District Council is protecting the environment and supporting under-privileged communities by donating its electronic waste to charity.

Expired council IT equipment is shipped to the Digital Wings Trust, a national organisation that refurbishes and recycles technology, as well as securely wiping all data, and then distributes it to charities around New Zealand.

As well as helping people access much-needed technology, it prevents e-waste ending up in landfills.

The council’s latest donation was shipped to the trust last week and included PCs, smartphones, and laptops.

Digital Wings Trust works with businesses and public sector organisations to donate IT equipment to charities and community organisations to boost educational and employment opportunities. Preference goes to organisations working in youth development and education.

Organisations are encouraged to donate unwanted equipment each time they upgrade systems.
