Rachel Smith

Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Ward

Rachel Smith has lived in the Far North for majority of her life, and was born on the coastline of Te Hiku. She is a mother of 3, a self-confessed Local Government geek, and a lover of being on the ocean. She lives in Kerikeri with her husband, children, two dogs, and a cat. As a family, they dream of living self sufficiently, with all of their food provided by their land. Unfortunately, green fingers is not one of Rachel’s many talents, and that dream is a “long term vision”.

As Chair of the Strategy committee, Rachel brings a future focused scope to the table, with a lot of her thinking based around her children. Ensuring that decisions are made for the future residents of the Far North, with an outcome-based approach to her role as a first term Councillor.

Rachel served her first term in Local Government on the Bay of Islands – Whangaroa Community Board, where she also represented as the Zone 1 representative for the LGNZ Young Elected Members Committee. This term, as a Councillor, Rachel has been elected to the LGNZ Governance and Strategy Advisory Group, where she looks forward to gaining a vast exposure to the Local Government sector of Aotearoa, as well as contributing her view-points to the overall approach that the sector takes across the country.

It’s no secret that Rachel is a lover of good coffee, and is always up for good communication between communities and their representatives. She looks forward to playing an integral role in the continuous improvement of the way the Far North District Council take their communities on the journey through decision making.
