Disability Action Group

The Disability Action Group works with the council to advocate for a more accessible environment for Far North residents and visitors with disabilities. Examples of successes include disability awareness training for council staff; the construction of pool stairs at the Bay of Islands Recreation Centre in Kawakawa; and the purchase of an accessible portaloo for use at Far North community events.

The group also gives input on urban planning decisions, particularly how to improve towns and parks for those navigating life with a disability. How able-bodied people can make life easier for everyone – including those with disabilities - is also a focus of the group.

Want to help people living with disabilities in the Far North? Great! The council’s Disability Action Group needs new members.

Far North residents with disabilities, senior citizens, and those who work in disability or age support who are interested in joining the Disability Action Group are invited to email  disabilityactiongroup@fndc.govt.nz or contact Kim Hammond on 09 401 5316.

Watch David Senior and Derek Donker explain the challenges faced by the disabled community – including the illegal use of mobility car parks and the impact it has.
