Lead the pack: Register your dog from 1 July

The new dog registration year begins today, Tuesday 1 July, for Far North dog owners. Whether your kurī (dog) is a working dog, hunting companion, or a much-loved member of the family, now is the time to register them.

All dogs in the Far North must be registered by law once they reach three months of age or as soon as they come into your care. While registration is required year-round, 1 July marks the start of the new registration period. This includes an annual change in dog registration tag colour and updated fees and charges for the new financial year.

Registering early comes with benefits. If you register your dog between 1 July and 31 August, you'll pay the best rate available for the year. Plus, you’ll automatically go in the draw to win one of 10 prize packs. Each including a full refund of your registration plus two large bags of dog biscuits – enough to get any tail wagging!

You can register your dog online or in person at any council service centre. Failure to register your dog could result in a $300 fine.

This year’s registration campaign features Storm, a rescue pup from the council’s Adopt-a-dog programme. Storm was found the roaming the streets and thanks to the programme, received the care she needed to become a fit, healthy and safe companion. She was later adopted into a loving home with her new mum, Jody.

The Adopt-a-Dog programme is funded in part by dog registration fees. Adopting any dog through the scheme includes dog registration, microchipping, de-sexing, vaccination, and testing for parvovirus. Your registration fee also helps the council’s Animal Management Team respond to stray, barking, and aggressive dogs, reunite lost dogs with their owners, and enforce the Dog Control Act.

Dog owners who have previously registered their dogs will receive a renewal reminder in the post over the coming weeks. Including a copy of Kurī Karere-Doggo Digest, the council’s annual dog newsletter, featuring information about responsible ownership.

To find out more about registering your dog, view fees and charges, or download the newsletter, visit the Register your dog page on our website.

Don’t wait – register your dog early, support responsible ownership, and you could win some great prizes. Do the mahi and be in to win the treats!

Prize Pack Terms & Conditions: Only one free dog registration per winner. Winners will be drawn after the promotional period ends on 31 August.
