VIDEO – Battle of Ruapekapeka Pā remembered 180 years on
Kawiti Marae recently hosted three days of events in commemoration of the 180th anniversary of the battle of Ruapekapeka Pā, the final clash in the Northern campaign – a conflict that pitted 400 Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Hine warriors against 1600 British soldiers.
In building a pā, Māori chief Kawiti and his allies pioneered the use of trenches, foxholes and other fortifications that the British military copied and deployed in subsequent conflicts.
FNDC councillor Arohanui Allen and Ngāti Hine rangatira Pita Tipene explain the significance of both the event and support provided by the council and Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board.
