Kaikohe playground re-opens to tamariki

A popular playground at Memorial Park in Kaikohe was re-opened to tamariki earlier this week following the final addition of bark mulch and removal of security fencing.

The work is part of a $750,000 revamp to the park that will eventually see the addition of new park entrances, upgraded footpaths, a learn-to-ride and balance bike track, a fully accessible amenity block and a wide loop track linking park areas.

The playground now includes a wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, in-ground trampolines, slides, a sand play area, swings, and an eagles’ lair rope climbing tower.

The playground upgrade began in August last year but has faced several delays due to ongoing wet weather, supply chain issues and the vandalism of some new play equipment.

The long-awaited reopening followed the addition of soft fall bark mulch around a coloured and permanent rubberised safety surface within the playground area. Security fencing was also relocated to the southern end of the park so that new concrete tracks can be completed. Contractors are due to begin work on the remainder of the learn to ride and balance track this week.

A grand opening for the upgraded Memorial Park will be held once all works have been completed.
