Leading the way in climate action
Far North District Council is the first local authority in Northland to endorse a climate action policy.
Far North District Council is the first local authority in Northland to endorse a climate action policy.
At a council meeting on 11 December, elected members agreed to the policy that provides a framework for decision-making on climate action and marks a significant step forward in climate mitigation and efforts towards climate adaptation.
Recent significant weather events that lashed the Far North emphasised the need for swift action.
The policy puts the council at the forefront of proactive climate action, ensuring a structured approach to tackle the challenges in the Far North, including collaboration with tangata whenua.
It also reflects the council’s commitment to reducing emissions, adapting to climate change, and promoting a sustainable future.
An internal climate action reference group will drive policy implementation, develop plans, assess risks, and conduct monitoring and evaluation.
