Shade sails crown Kerikeri Domain playground
New shade sails, a barbeque area, and fitness equipment are now installed at the Kerikeri Domain as work on a new perimeter footpath continues. Read more here..
Long-awaited shade sails are now offering sun protection to those using a new playground at Kerikeri Domain.
The sails provide shelter for children using key equipment in the centre of the playground, but installation of the safety equipment has been dogged by delays over the past four months – the most recent being the Cyclone Gabrielle last week.
A new area featuring stainless steel barbeque next to the playground was also recently opened. Both it and the shade sails are part of the Kerikeri Domain Revitalisation Project, which has already added a new skate ramp, skate bowl and basketball court to Kerikeri’s central greenspace. New fitness equipment has also recently been added at the bowling club end of the domain (including a push-up bar, sit-up bench, leg-lift and parallel bars).
A six-week project to widen the existing perimeter footpath is currently underway. The wider, 2.5 metre footpath will follow the same route as the previous perimeter path except for a small section adjacent to the supermarket. This section deviates from the old footpath layout to accommodate plans to landscape the area for a community amphitheatre in the future, when funds become available.
The new wider footpath has been planned for two years and was designed for two-way pedestrian traffic and to allow for use by motorised wheelchairs. Construction of the new footpath is being undertaken in four stages within fenced zones and will end outside the Kerikeri Bowls Club. Public access to the playground, skate park, library and domain sports fields is unaffected during the footpath construction.
Concept plans to revitalise the domain were unveiled at a community meeting and barbeque at the domain in February 2021 and subsequently displayed on billboards at the site before construction began. These plans included the current layout of the wider perimeter footpath.
