Result Full Reports, which include voting numbers per candidate, for preliminary results and progress results are now available on our Local Elections 2022 website - here.

Final election results for Far North District Council will not be known until the end of week.

While votes sent in by post or deposited directly into ballot boxes have now been tallied, special votes – which must be counted and checked in conjunction with the Electoral Commission – will begin today (Monday 10 October).

Special votes enable eligible voters to cast a vote when they:

  • Have not received voting papers
  • Have newly enrolled or updated their address details
  • Are on an unpublished roll.

In the Far North, special votes were cast right up until voting closed at midday on Saturday at three service centres – Te Ahu in Kaitāia, the John Butler Centre in Kerikeri, and council headquarters in Kaikohe. The number of special votes cast in this election is unknown at this stage.

The final results for each candidate can only be released once special votes have been counted. It is anticipated the result will be available on Friday 14 October 2022.

Each council in New Zealand handles the release of election results differently. This is also influenced by different voting systems. First Past the Post (FPP) voting (as used by Northland Regional Council) is easier to calculate, while Single Transferable Voting (STV), adopted by Far North District Council for this election, is more complicated where candidates are ranked by preference.

The latest results available for the FNDC election are the preliminary results only and were posted at 2.45pm on Sunday 9 October. These are available here.

Latest figures show that 40 per cent of eligible voters cast their votes, which is 7 per cent less than the voting turn out at the same time in the 2019 local election. This percentage will change as special votes are counted.
