Procter Library wrapped for roof repair

From Monday 8 April a limited selection of books from the Childrens’ and Adult Fiction sections will be available while the existing tin roof is removed and rafters are upgraded.

The sight of scaffolding and shrink wrap encasing the back of the Procter Library this week is a clear sign that work to repair a section of the building’s roof is entering a crucial phase.

From Monday 8 April a limited selection of books from the Childrens’ and Adult Fiction sections will be available while the existing tin roof is removed, and rafters are upgraded to prepare for a new roof membrane. Some parts of the Children and Adult Fiction areas will be cordoned off during this time to ensure the safety of library users.

This phase of work is expected to take 10 days and access to the public toilet at the back of the building will also be limited during this time. Posters will be displayed at all six council-operated libraries, as well as in the mobile library service, to inform customers of the temporary changes. Work is due to be completed by Thursday 18 April.

Degradation of the roof, which encloses the original two-room building constructed in 1974, has resulted in leaks during heavy rains where it intersects with roofing on the rest of the library. The renovations will remove a triangular structure and replace it with a mono-pitched roof that includes a durable waterproof membrane.

The new roof will have an expected lifetime of at least 25 years.

The entire renovation is expected to take 14 weeks and will continue until 10 May.

A section of the car park at the back of the library is also closed to the public during the works.
