Health licences

These business types are required to obtain a health license from Council:

  • Hairdressers
  • Funeral homes
  • Offensive trades (such as septic tank and grease trap cleaning)
  • Camping grounds (not providing food)

Summer Issue 2022

To use any premises as a hairdressing business, you must be registered with Council and hold a current certificate of registration and comply with the Health (Hairdressers) Regulations 1980. This applies whether you are working from a commercial premises or your home.

A hairdresser's licence is renewable on an annual basis, and a renewal reminder letter will be sent out prior to the required renewal date.

Mortuaries and funeral director businesses must be registered and undergo inspection on an annual basis.

Mortuaries must comply with the Health (Registration of Premises) Regulations 1966.

A renewal reminder letter will be sent out prior to the required renewal date.

In accordance with the Camping Ground Regulations 1985, if you operate a Camping Ground, you must be registered with the Council.

A camping ground licence is renewable on an annual basis, and a renewal reminder letter will be sent out prior to the required renewal date.

Camping grounds preparing and selling food products to the public are also required to register under The Food Act 2014.

Beauty therapy, tattooing and piercing businesses do not need to register in the Far North District. This may change in the future.

If you are a customer of one of these businesses and you believe that your health has been affected during a visit, you can lodge a complaint with Council.

If you want to register a health business in the Far North District, you can register by submitting a completed Health Licence Application Form.

Please ensure your premises meets building and planning requirements before you apply. You can contact a duty building officer or duty planner by calling free phone 0800 920 029.  Registration is renewable on an annual basis (1 July each year) and the fee for renewing a health license or applying for a new health license can be found in the Councils “Fees and Charges”.

Please fill out the Change of Occupier Application Form if the occupier for a health business has changed.
