The council is developing the district's first Open Spaces Strategy, which will set the direction for how parks, reserves, cycleways, beaches, rivers, playgrounds, and cemeteries are provided and managed.

The community is invited to provide feedback on how they currently use open spaces in the Far North, what’s most important about them, and what barriers (if any) they have in accessing them.

Open spaces play a significant role in community well-being, and support biodiversity and a healthy environment. It’s important they are sustainably managed to meet the needs of our growing community. An Open Spaces Strategy will provide a framework for this by looking ahead to the next 30 years and considering the challenges and opportunities we’re likely to see, including a changing climate, population growth and change, and advances in technology. It will recommend how the open space network can be protected and improved in the future.

To have your say on open spaces in the district, complete the survey at www.fndc.govt.nz/openspaces by Thursday 14 March 2024.

This feedback will help the project team to begin developing the draft Open Spaces Strategy. There will be another chance to share feedback when the council consults with the partners, stakeholders and the community on the draft strategy.

This strategy will not cover sports fields or community facilities, as these will be covered by a separate consultation process.
