Procter Library roof leak repairs to begin

Urgent roof repairs at Kerikeri’s Procter Library will see some resources temporarily relocated and public access to others limited from Tuesday 30 January.

Urgent roof repairs at Kerikeri’s Procter Library will see some resources temporarily relocated and public access to others limited from the end of this month.

The familiar curved shape of the current library building encloses the original two-room building constructed in 1974. Wear and tear at the interface of the old and new roof structures has resulted in leaks during heavy rains and about one-third of the library roof now needs to be replaced.

The original library building is approximately 300 square metres in size and is the current location of the kids’ section, the Toy Library, a public toilet, the Makerspace and staffroom.

During the 14-week renovation, beginning Tuesday 30 January, the popular kids’ area will be temporarily relocated into the main library space. This will result in a smaller collection of books being available for library users. A section of the car park at the back of the library will also be closed to the public while the work is underway.

The roof renovations will remove a triangular structure and replace it with a mono-pitched roof that includes a durable waterproof membrane. The entire area will be covered in shrink wrap to ensure dry work conditions during the renovation. The new roof will have an expected lifetime of at least 25 years.

Library staff say disruption to normal services will be kept to a minimum wherever possible, but ask that library users be patient during the much-needed renovation.
